A summary transcription will pick out the important bits and cut the waffle, saving you valuable time. It will generally cut the page count by a third to a half. An hour’s one-to-one interview can run to 15-20 pages of A4 in 12pt Times New Roman, a fast-moving focus group can be double that.
If a normal intelligent verbatim transcript reads like this:
It was only after I tried applying for a credit card again and got turned down that I realised there might be a problem with my credit report. I applied to Experian, Equifax and-, what’s the other one? I can’t remember. Oh yes, CallCredit, and when I got the reports through I found that my ex had taken out three loans in my name and hadn’t made any of the repayments.
A summary version of the paragraph would read like this:
I got turned down for a credit card and thought I should check my credit report. I applied to Experian, Equifax and CallCredit and found that my ex had taken out loans in my name and not made any repayments.
